March 31, 1945

Saturday

In England, Kenneth E. Cline wrote to his wife:

Mom said March 18 was Verne’s birthday. I’d forgotten it – or better yet – didn’t know it.

Further on in his letter to his wife, Ken wrote:

I almost forgot-Mom writes that Verne got hit by flak the other day in the shoulder, arm, and a little in the rear. But I hope it wasn’t anything serious. I’m going to try to call him tomorrow It’s been several days since I’ve heard from him. I guess this means the Purple Heart for him.

Notes & Commentary

1 Verne’s brother-in-law, 1st Lt. Kenneth E. Cline, was a B-24 pilot with the 392nd Bombardment Group (H) stationed at Wendling, Station 118.
