Kenneth Cline and his flight crew return to the 392nd Bombardment Group’s base at Wendling after their flak leave. Ken doesn’t feel well. He is ill.
While they were enjoying their leave, the 392nd Bombardment Group, as did other 8th Air Force units, began flying Trolley Missions.1 These missions gave the ground crews and other non-flying personnel an opportunity to see the damage wrought in Germany. Such missions by the 392nd Bombardment Group ended on 13 May.

I’d never heard of this, an new one for me. I wonder what they thought of the devastation they saw. Must have been a real eye opener!

The ground crews had worked long hours to keep the planes in the air. They had watched the crews go out and never come back or come back broken and with wounded men. This was their opportunity to see the results of their work and contribution.

What amazed me was how recovery appeared to be progressing. If the date at the bottom of December 1945 is correct, there appears to be minimization of bomb craters and even the marshaling yard (I think that’s what it’s called) appears to be repaired and back in working order… very necessary for recovery.
